Pirate radio station is shut down
A PIRATE station has been shut down after reports that it was interfering with London Fire Brigade emergency calls.
Xtreme Fm was targeted by Ofcom and police in a raid, which targeted the station's studio on an Edmonton trading estate and the transmitter, on the roof of a high rise block in Tottenham High Road.
Mixing desks, a CD player and records were seized at Hastingwood Trading Estate, in Harbert Road, worth a total of £3,000, and two arrests were made. It is believed that those taken for questioning were around 19 years old.
Xtreme FM has been running for six years and broadcasts a mix of garage, grime and hip hop.
But the station became a serious issue for the authorities when reports emerged that its broadcasts could be heard over the internal communications network used by London Fire Brigade.
A spokesman for broadcasting regulator Ofcom said: "Ofcom has to make sure the airwaves are free from interference. In particular it affects the communications systems used by the emergency services, from the fire brigade to air traffic control."
He added: "In north London we have a particular problem as there is more high ground there and a higher prevalence of transmitters.
